Medic. Conscientious Cooperator. Hero.

In the heavy, brutal machine of total war, a soldier’s worth is measured by his ability to fire his rifle. However, faith in the mission sustains discipline and resolve. The rules of combat, the structure of an infantry squad, and battlefield strategies rest on one idea. To survive and win, you must be willing to destroy the enemy.

Nevertheless, in spring 1945, on a blood-covered rock plateau on Okinawa, a slender, soft-spoken young man overturned this rule. His name was Desmond Thomas Doss. He was a devout Seventh-day Adventist from Lynchburg, Virginia, guided by faith.

Desmond Doss walked directly into one of the worst battles of World War II without a single weapon. He did not carry a rifle, he refused to wear a pistol, and he would not even touch a gun during target practice. He went to war armed only with a small pocket Bible, a canvas bag full of bandages, and an unshakeable promise made directly to God.

Definition

buck·ler [ˈbək(ə)lər] noun historical

a small round shield held by a handle or worn on the forearm.

To his commanding officers, this quiet young man looked like a disaster waiting to happen. They thought he was a coward or a mental liability who would fall apart under fire. To the regular soldiers in B Company, 1st Battalion, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, he looked like a dangerous burden. They genuinely feared that his refusal to shoot a gun would get them all killed.

But when the 77th Division finally hit the steep, jagged cliffs of the Maeda Escarpment—a terrifying place the men called “Hacksaw Ridge”—everything changed. During a massive enemy attack, the American forces were completely overwhelmed and forced to retreat down the cliff side. Only one man stayed behind on top of the fire-swept plateau. It was the weaponless medic.

Under an apocalyptic storm of artillery, mortars, and machine-gun fire, Doss spent hours rescuing his wounded brothers. He worked entirely alone, pulling injured men out of the dirt and lowering them down a 40-foot drop using a rope. As his hands bled and his muscles tore, he repeated a personal prayer over and over again: “Lord, please help me get just one more.”

This historical account looks deeply at the life, faith, and military service of Corporal Desmond Doss, sourced from official battle logs, modern research, and eyewitness statements from both American and Japanese soldiers. Above all, it shows how an absolute faith in God created one of the greatest displays of pure courage in human history. This truth mirrors the words of the prophet Isaiah:

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Biography and Early Upbringing

The Forging of a Conviction

Desmond Thomas Doss was born on February 7, 1919, in the mountain city of Lynchburg, Virginia. His early life was shaped by two major forces: the heavy financial struggles of the Great Depression and the strict, literal Bible teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

His father, William Doss, was a carpenter who had fought in the trenches of World War I. The terrible things William saw in Europe had broken his spirit, leaving him deeply depressed and prone to heavy drinking. His mother, Martha Doss, was the steady spiritual anchor of the home. She raised Desmond, his sister Audrey, and his brother Harold to love the Bible, keep the Sabbath holy on Saturdays, and follow a strict vegetarian diet.

Thou shalt not kill.

            Exodus 20:13 · KJV
            Read in context →

Two specific events in Desmond’s childhood fixed his belief in non-violence forever. The first was a simple piece of religious artwork hanging on the living room wall. It was an illustrated poster of the Ten Commandments. Next to the words “Thou shalt not kill,” there was a vivid drawing of the world’s first murder. It showed Cain standing over the lifeless, bloody body of his brother Abel.

Young Desmond would look at that picture for hours. He would wonder how a brother could do something so terrible to his own family. To his young mind, the lesson was absolute. God was not making a suggestion; He was giving a permanent command.

The second event was a terrifying family argument that occurred when Desmond was an older boy. His father, during a bout of heavy drinking, got into a violent fight with Martha’s brother. A pistol was pulled out, and a tragedy almost happened. Martha stepped between the men, took the gun away, and quickly handed it to young Desmond, telling him to run and hide it.

As Desmond sprinted down the street to conceal the heavy steel weapon, his heart pounded with terror. He realized that if his mother hadn’t stepped in, his father might have become like Cain. Right then and there, Desmond made a solemn promise to the Lord. He vowed that he would never touch a firearm again for the rest of his life.

As he grew up, Desmond also developed a deep desire to help people who were hurting. Even though his family had very little money, he would regularly walk miles to the local hospital to donate blood whenever he heard on the radio that there was a shortage. He learned early on that saving lives brought immense joy.

When the United States entered World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Desmond was working as a shipbuilder in Virginia. Because his job was vital to national defense, the government offered him a legal deferment, meaning he did not have to go to war. But Desmond felt a powerful moral duty to help his country fight against tyranny.

He did not want to hide at home while other young men fought and died. However, he refused to compromise his promise to God. He volunteered for the United States Army on April 1, 1942, but he specifically asked to be a non-combatant medic. He chose to call himself a “Conscientious Cooperator” rather than an objector, explaining that he wanted to serve the flag, but build up lives instead of tearing them down. His heart was guided by the words of Christ:

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

            John 15:13 · KJV
            Read in context →

Military Service and Rupture in Training

The Crucible of Fort Meade

The United States Army of 1942 was a massive machine designed to turn ordinary citizens into disciplined killers. It was not built to handle unique religious beliefs. When Desmond arrived at training camps like Fort Meade, Maryland, the military paperwork failed to register his special status correctly. Instead of being sent directly to medical school, he was placed into a regular, frontline combat unit: Company B, 307th Infantry Regiment.

This mistake caused immediate, intense conflict between Desmond and the rest of the unit. Infantry squads rely entirely on teamwork and firepower. Every single soldier needs to know that the man next to him will shoot to kill when the enemy attacks. Desmond’s absolute refusal to pick up an M1 Garand rifle was instantly seen as a sign of cowardice or a cheap trick to avoid danger.

The daily life of Private Doss in training became a long, lonely nightmare of emotional and physical abuse. His platoon leader, Captain Jack Glover, looked at him as a major threat to military discipline. His fellow soldiers mocked him constantly during marches, calling him a parasite and a holy roller.

The Harassment Desmond Faced Took Several Forms:

The Sabbath Argument: Because of his faith, Desmond refused to do any army work from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. Even though he volunteered to work all day on Sundays without rest to make up for it, the other men felt he was getting an unfair weekend vacation.

Physical Attacks: When Desmond returned to the dark barracks late at night after praying alone in the woods, men would throw heavy leather boots and metal mess kits at his head while he knelt by his bed.

The Mental Discharge: His officers tried to use military laws to throw him out of the Army as a “Section 8” psychiatric case, claiming he was mentally unfit for duty. Desmond refused to sign the papers, stating he was completely sane and wanted to serve.

The Court-Martial Trap: Command staff ordered him to hold a rifle during inspections, warning him that refusing a direct order meant a severe prison sentence. Desmond stood his ground, stating he would accept prison before he broke God’s law. The threats only stopped when high-level officials confirmed that federal law legally protected his right to be an unarmed medic.

Through all this systemic cruelty, Desmond never yelled back, never raised his fists, and never held a grudge. He simply remembered the words of the Apostle Peter:

For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

I went straight to the commander and said he was going to be a complete dead-weight when we hit the beach. I tried everything to get him out of my company. He just looked me in the eye and said, ‘Captain, I’ll be a better medic than any of these men. I’ll save your life if you’re hit.’ I thought he was a complete liar. I had no idea how wrong I was.”

“The men were genuinely brutal to him. They hated him because they thought he was using religion to save his own skin. One night, a big guy leaned over his bunk and yelled, ‘You enjoy your praying now, Doss. Because when we get into combat, I’m gonna personally shoot you in the back.’ Desmond didn’t even flinch. He just stayed on his knees and kept praying for the soul of the man who had just threatened his life.”

Early Campaigns

The Pacific Proving Grounds (Guam and Leyte)

Before his ultimate test at Hacksaw Ridge, Desmond Doss went through intense combat during the heavy jungle battles of Guam and Leyte in late 1944. It was during these terrifying, muddy island campaigns that his absolute bravery completely won over the hearts of the men who had once hated him.

In the thick, dark rain forests of Guam, Japanese snipers were hidden everywhere in the trees, specifically targeting medics. Normal army rules told medics to stay hidden until a fire fight was completely over. But whenever Desmond heard a man scream for help, he would immediately break cover and crawl out into the open, using his own body as a human shield to protect the patient while he bandaged them.

The infantrymen noticed that Desmond did not care about his own safety at all. He also treated wounded Japanese soldiers with the exact same tenderness and care that he gave to American GIs. When his friends asked why he would risk his life to save an enemy who wanted to kill him, Desmond simply replied that God made all souls, and his only job was to heal, not to judge. His actions perfectly matched the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew:

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

            Matthew 5:44 · KJV
            Read in context →

On the rain-soaked island of Leyte, the mud was so deep that trucks and tanks got stuck. During one advance across an open valley, Company B was pinned down by a hidden Japanese machine-gun nest. Two riflemen were hit badly and lay bleeding out in the middle of a wide, muddy field.

Desmond did not hesitate for a second. He dashed out into the open mud, sliding down to reach the fallen soldiers. He applied pressure bandages while bullets zipped through his uniform jacket, pulled the first soldier back to safety, and immediately ran right back out to get the second man. By the time the Leyte campaign was finished, the men who had once threatened to kill Desmond were begging to be near him, believing that God sent angels to guard him. They saw the truth in the Psalms:

The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

The Battle for Maeda Escarpment (Hacksaw Ridge)

By late April 1945, the American invasion of Okinawa had slammed into a massive wall of defense. The leader of the Japanese forces, Lieutenant General Mitsuru Ushijima, had built a giant underground fortress across the southern end of the island. He used the natural limestone hills to create a network of tunnels, hidden bunkers, and heavy gun positions.

The most dangerous point of this defensive line was the Maeda Escarpment. To the tired soldiers of the 77th Division, it was known simply as “Hacksaw Ridge.” It was a massive, jagged limestone cliff that rose 400 feet into the air. The top of the cliff was a flat, rocky plateau that looked completely empty but was actually a deadly trap.

The Japanese military used a clever strategy called a reverse-slope defense. They did not stand at the edge of the cliff where American navy ships could shoot them. Instead, they hid deep inside the mountain in caves that could withstand the heaviest bombs.

When American soldiers climbed up the massive cargo nets to the top of the ridge, they saw nothing but broken rocks. But as soon as the companies moved a few hundred yards inland, Japanese soldiers would pour out of hidden holes in the ground behind them, cutting them off from the cliff edge and opening fire from all sides. Desmond Doss knew the danger was absolute, but his spirit stayed strong, resting on the promises of God:

4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

<sup class="bb-verse-num">5</sup>Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

Data and Engagement Statistical Breakdown

To truly understand what happened at Hacksaw Ridge, we must look at the actual numbers. The losses taken by the 77th Division were incredibly high, making the survival of an unarmed man even more unbelievable.

A Chronicle of Heroism

The Twelve Hours of the Maeda Escarpment

On the morning of May 5, 1945, Company B made a desperate push to take the top of the ridge. The men climbed up the giant rope nets and advanced across the flat, rocky plateau. Everything was completely quiet for a few moments.

Suddenly, at around two o’clock in the afternoon, the entire mountain seemed to explode. The Japanese forces launched a massive ambush, firing hundreds of mortars and artillery shells directly into the American ranks. Hundreds of enemy soldiers rushed out of the caves with bayonets. The American line collapsed immediately, and the order was given to retreat back down the cliff side.

Out of the 155 men who had climbed up that morning, only 55 made it back down the cargo nets. The other 100 men were left stranded on top—severely wounded, unable to walk, and completely cut off from medical help.

As the last healthy soldiers scrambled down the ropes, they looked up and saw that Private Desmond Doss had stayed behind. He refused to leave his friends. He walked right back out into the thick black smoke, completely unprotected, to find the men who were crying out in pain.

For the next twelve hours, Doss worked entirely by himself in a place that had become a literal field of death. Crawling on his stomach through pools of blood, he moved from one shell crater to the next, checking for signs of life.

Every time he found a living soldier, he would bandage their wounds, wrap them in a special double-bowline knot he had learned as a boy, and drag them to the edge of the cliff. He would then slowly lower the man down the 40-foot rock face, using his own arms to hold the weight until the medics at the bottom could catch them.

As the hours dragged on, the rough rope tore the skin off Desmond’s palms, leaving his hands raw and covered in blood. His muscles were completely exhausted, and Japanese patrols were actively searching the field to kill any survivors. Yet, every single time he finished lowering a man, he looked back out at the smoke and prayed his specific warfare petition: “Lord, please help me get just one more.” He lived out the words of the Apostle Paul:

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

            Galatians 6:9 · KJV

One of the men he saved that afternoon was Captain Jack Glover—the very officer who had tried so hard to throw him out of the military during training. Glover was lying paralyzed by shrapnel, completely helpless. Desmond crawled through a wall of machine-gun fire, bandaged his captain, and dragged him to the cliff edge, proving that his love for his comrades had no boundaries.

Official division records later detailed the unbelievable scenes witnessed by the men waiting below. According to an excerpt extracted from the 77th Infantry Division After-Action Combat Logs (May 1945):

“During the afternoon of 5 May, the battalion witnessed a spectacular exhibition of courage. Under an intense concentrated mortar barrage, Private First Class Desmond T. Doss refused to seek safety. Standing completely silhouetted at the precipice, he manually lowered wounded infantrymen one by one down the sheer face. His actions single-handedly prevented the annihilation of the remaining elements of the company.”

The Divine Shield

The Japanese Sniper Barrage

The historical reality of Desmond Doss’s survival borders on the miraculous. During the entire twelve-hour rescue mission, Doss was completely unarmed and frequently forced to stand fully upright at the very edge of the ridge while tying his rope harnesses. This made him an easy target for enemy marksmen.

Years after the battle, a Christian missionary working in Japan uncovered a staggering piece of first-hand evidence. He met an Imperial Japanese Army veteran who had been stationed at the Maeda Escarpment during the ambush on May 5.

This enemy soldier explicitly recalled having an American medic in his sniper rifle scopes multiple times. The medic had no gun and was completely open to a fatal shot. Yet, every single time the sniper squeezed the trigger to kill Doss, the firing pin failed and the rifle jammed.

Remarkably, the Japanese soldier noted that when he turned his weapon away to target other moving soldiers, the rifle fired perfectly. The moment he re-aligned his sights onto Desmond Doss, the weapon locked up unexplainably. This extraordinary testimony matches the scriptural promise of divine protection:

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

The Medic’s Supply Kit and Reconstructed Uniform

To understand how Desmond Doss kept 75 men alive while they were bleeding out on the rocks, we must look at the exact medical gear and combat uniform he carried into the fight. He did not have a modern hospital; he carried everything on his hips in two heavy canvas bags known as the M1910 Medical Corps Combat Kits.

Every item in Desmond’s kit was designed to do one thing: keep a soldier alive for just a few more hours until he could reach a real doctor. He had to use these simple tools with perfect speed while artillery shells were exploding all around him.

Solutions in the Heat of Battle

The Battle Against Bleeding: He used heavy canvas tourniquets to stop soldiers from bleeding to death from lost limbs. If a man had a deep chest wound, Desmond would stuff it with Carlisle gauze dressings to seal out the air and stop the lungs from collapsing.

The War Against Infection: In the hot, damp air of Okinawa, wounds became infected within hours. Desmond carried dozens of packets of Sulfa powder. He would rip the paper open with his teeth and pour the white chemical dust directly into open flesh wounds to stop bacteria.

The Relief of Pain: To keep soldiers from dying of physical shock brought on by extreme pain, he carried small metal tubes of morphine. He would inject the medicine directly into the soldier’s arm, whisper a prayer into their ear to keep them calm, and then begin the long, agonizing crawl back to the rope station.

He trusted completely in the ultimate Healer, remembering the words of the Psalm:

Experiences from Both Sides – Eyewitness Recollections

The fact that an unarmed man survived twelve full hours of constant combat on top of Hacksaw Ridge is a matter of historical record. The accounts written down by both American and Japanese soldiers after the war show that something extraordinary happened on that mountain.

I pulled the trigger twice, but both times the rifle jammed—a mechanical failure that had never happened to me before. My friend tried to shoot him with a machine gun, but a sudden American mortar burst went off right in front of us, throwing off his aim. We started talking about this man as a holy ghost, because no regular human could stand in that spot and survive.”

Final Wounds and the Search for the Holy Bible

Desmond Doss continued to serve on the front lines for two more weeks as the 77th Division pushed deeper into Okinawa. But the cold laws of probability eventually caught up with the brave medic. On the night of May 21, 1945, his unit was hit by a massive night-time ambush near the city of Shuri.

While Desmond was treating a wounded soldier in the dark, a Japanese hand grenade bounced into their dirt hole. Instead of jumping out to save himself, Desmond placed his boot directly over the grenade to shield his patient. The explosion went off, tearing seventeen pieces of hot metal shrapnel into his legs and hips.

Refusing to call another medic out into the dangerous crossfire, Desmond waited five hours in the mud, praying silently. When stretcher-bearers finally arrived to carry him away, they were attacked by a Japanese sniper. Desmond saw another soldier lying on the ground who was in even worse shape. He rolled off the stretcher, told the bearers to take the other man, and began crawling back to the hospital tents alone.

As he was dragging his bloody body through the dirt, a sniper bullet struck his right arm, completely fracturing the bone. In a final show of incredible willpower, Desmond crawled over to a discarded rifle on the ground and used the wooden stock as a splint to tie up his broken arm. He then crawled an additional 300 yards through the deep mud until he finally reached safety.

It was only when he was safely aboard a hospital ship that a profound panic hit him. He reached into his chest shirt pocket and realized that his small King James Bible—the gift from his wife Dorothy—was missing. It had fallen out somewhere in the blood and mud on top of the escarpment. Doss sent word back to his unit, stating he felt completely lost without his source of spiritual power.

What happened next deeply demonstrates the absolute love his unit now held for him. Upon hearing that their beloved medic had lost his Bible, the entire combat company halted their advance. An entire infantry company turned around, returned directly into the active fire zone of the Maeda Escarpment, and formed a horizontal line. They combed through the rocks on their hands and knees under fire until a soldier successfully located the blood-stained Bible and mailed it safely back home to Doss. They fulfilled the ancient proverb:

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

The Post-War Years and Continuing in a Life of Ministry

When Desmond Doss came home from the Pacific, his body was completely broken. In 1946, he was diagnosed with a severe case of tuberculosis that he had caught while living in the wet trenches of Leyte. The illness was so bad that doctors had to surgically remove five of his ribs and one of his lungs.

He spent five and a half long years in military hospitals recovering from his wounds. Because of an overdose of antibiotics used to save his life from the infection, he eventually became completely deaf in 1976. Despite these heavy physical trials, he never complained, believing that God had spared his life for a special purpose.

Desmond spent his post-war years focused entirely on helping young people. He became a major leader in the Pathfinders, a global youth organization run by his church. He built a small cabin in Rising Fawn, Georgia, and opened up his land to host youth retreats, survival camps, and outdoor skills workshops.

He loved to sit around the campfire with young boys and girls, teaching them how to read the stars, pitch canvas tents, and find clean mountain water. He would bring out the heavy hemp ropes he used during the war and show the kids how to tie knots, always emphasizing that a simple skill, combined with a prayer to God, could change history.

He remained completely humble until his death on March 23, 2006, at the age of 87. He never wanted to be treated like a celebrity or a Hollywood star. When public crowds cheered for him, he would simply point to heaven, stating that all the glory belonged to the Lord. His post-war life matched the lesson found in the Book of Proverbs:

He was a company aidman when the 1st Battalion assaulted a jagged escarpment 400 feet high. As our troops gained the summit, a heavy concentration of artillery, mortar, and machine-gun fire crashed into them, inflicting approximately 75 casualties and driving the others back. Pfc. Doss refused to seek cover and remained in the fire-swept area with the many stricken, carrying them one by one to the edge of the escarpment and there lowering them on a rope-supported litter down the face of a cliff to friendly hands. On 2 May, he exposed himself to heavy rifle and mortar fire in rescuing a wounded man 200 yards forward of the lines on the same escarpment; and two days later he treated four men who had been cut down while assaulting a strongly defended cave, advancing through a shower of grenades to within eight yards of enemy forces in a cave’s mouth, where he dressed his comrades’ wounds before making four separate trips under fire to evacuate them to safety. On 5 May, he unhesitatingly braved enemy shelling and small-arms fire to assist an artillery officer. He applied bandages, moved his patient to a spot that offered protection from small-arms fire, and, while artillery and mortar shells fell close by, painstakingly administered plasma. Later that day, when an American was severely wounded by fire from a cave, Pfc. Doss crawled to him where he had fallen 25 feet from the enemy position, rendered aid, and carried him 100 yards to safety while continually exposed to enemy fire. On 21 May, in a night attack on high ground near Shuri, he remained in exposed territory while the rest of his company took cover, fearlessly risking the chance that he would be mistaken for an infiltrating Japanese and giving aid to the injured until he was himself seriously wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. Rather than call another aidman from cover, he cared for his own injuries and waited five hours before litter bearers reached him and started carrying him to cover. The trio was caught in an enemy tank attack and Pfc. Doss, seeing a more critically wounded man nearby, crawled off the litter and directed the bearers to give their first attention to the other man. Awaiting the litter bearers’ return, he was again struck, this time suffering a compound fracture of one arm. With magnificent fortitude he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station. Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in the face of desperately dangerous conditions Pfc. Doss saved the lives of many soldiers. His name became a symbol throughout the 77th Infantry Division for outstanding gallantry far above and beyond the call of duty.

The Story Retold now includes the BibleBridge Scripture Atlas. This tool reveals how biblical themes connect through shared verses. Instead of studying topics in isolation, you can see the surrounding ideas that consistently appear together in Scripture.

Take any theme (Doctrine and Gospel shown above) and see how it connects to shared passages across Scripture.

Start with one topic, follow its strongest connections, and open the shared verses to see why those themes belong together. Scripture Atlas helps pastors, teachers, and Bible readers study with more clarity, depth, and less guesswork.

Dive Deeper and Compare with Scripture Atlas

Scripture Atlas revolutionizes biblical study by mapping the intricate web of connections between theological themes across the entire canon. Unlike traditional topical studies that treat concepts like Grace or Redemption as isolated subjects, this tool visually demonstrates how these ideas are organically intertwined through shared scriptural references.

For instance, when examining Grace, the Atlas doesn’t merely list relevant verses—it reveals how this theme consistently overlaps with Atonement in Levitical sacrifices, intersects with the Cross in Pauline epistles, and intertwines with Faith throughout Hebrews and the Gospels. These aren’t artificial groupings; they’re relationships the biblical authors themselves established through repeated linguistic and thematic echoes.

The methodology mirrors how the human brain forms associations—through neural pathways strengthened by repetition. Just as neurons fire together to wire together, Scripture Atlas shows how biblical concepts strengthen each other through their recurring partnerships across diverse books and genres.

A pastor preparing a sermon on Justification might discover its unexpected connection to Creation through shared passages in Romans, giving fresh insight into how God’s declarative power operates similarly in forming worlds and declaring sinners righteous.

Bible teachers can trace how the Holy Spirit’s role in Exodus reappears in Acts, then again in Corinthians, creating a three-dimensional understanding impossible to glean from concordance studies alone.

What makes this approach particularly powerful is its resistance to proof-texting. By forcing users to engage with entire passages rather than isolated verses, Scripture Atlas maintains the contextual integrity of each theme while revealing deeper patterns.

The shared verses between topics function like joint ligaments—showing which theological concepts were designed by the biblical authors to move together. When Ezekiel’s vision of dry bones connects with Pentecost through shared linguistic markers, or when Job’s suffering mirrors Christ’s passion in unexpected ways, these aren’t scholarly impositions but demonstrable textual relationships. For serious students of Scripture, this transforms Bible study from a flat, analytical exercise into a dynamic exploration of God’s unified revelation.

Instead of jumping between tools or losing context, everything stays in one place. On the main site, this extends into a visual topic map that shows how themes relate across the entire Bible.

A Reevaluation of the Turin Shroud and its Authenticity

The Shroud of Turin, also known as the Holy Shroud, is a piece of linen cloth that has been the subject of intense debate for centuries due to its purported connection to Jesus Christ. Many believe it to be the actual burial shroud that wrapped His body after the crucifixion, while others dismiss it as a clever medieval forgery. Despite numerous scientific examinations, the debate rages on, with evidence supporting both sides. Let us take a look at the historical record, scientific analyses, and studies that have been conducted on the shroud, and evaluate the claims of its authenticity with the most up-to-date information and sources.

First photo of the shroud By Secondo Pia – 1898 (face center-left).

Introduction to the Shroud of Turin

The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth in a three-to-one herringbone twill composed of flax fibrils, measuring approximately 4.4 by 1.1 meters (14 ft 5 in × 3 ft 7 in). What makes this piece of fabric profoundly significant is the image it bears—a faint yet striking depiction of a man who appears to have endured wounds that mirror those described in the New Testament accounts of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion.

“When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.”
Matthew 27:57-60

The image shows markings that resemble the scourging of the back, the crown of thorns on the head, nail wounds in the wrists and feet, and a spear wound in the side. These resemblances have led many to believe that the Shroud might be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ himself.

View Full Sized Image of Shroud

The Shroud is housed in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, Italy, where it is preserved and occasionally displayed for public viewing. This relic is not just an artifact but a source of immense spiritual significance for millions of Christians around the world. Pilgrims from various corners of the globe travel to Turin, drawn by the mystery and the profound sense of connection to the divine it inspires. The reverence for the Shroud transcends mere historical curiosity—it is intertwined with deep faith and the contemplation of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice.

Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, Italy

The cloth’s origin is thought to trace back to the Middle East, dating to the 1st century AD. However, its precise history is enveloped in layers of mystery and intrigue. The first historical records mentioning the Shroud appear in the 14th century when it was reportedly discovered in the possession of a French knight, Geoffroi de Charny. The intervening centuries between its presumed origin and its documented existence are a blank canvas, inviting endless speculation and research.

Known Timeline of the Shroud

1353-1357: The Shroud is first recorded in the possession of Geoffroy de Charny in Lirey, France.

1389: Bishop Pierre d’Arcis denounces the Shroud as a forgery.

1453: Margaret de Charny deeds the Shroud to the House of Savoy.

1532: The Shroud suffers damage from a fire in Chambéry, France.

1578: The Shroud is moved to Turin by the House of Savoy.

1694: Repairs are made to the Shroud by Sebastian Valfrè.

1868: Further repairs are made by Clotilde of Savoy.

1898: The Shroud is first photographed by Secondo Pia.

1983: The Shroud is given to the Holy See by the House of Savoy.

1997: A fire threatens the Shroud, possibly caused by arson.

2002: The Shroud undergoes restoration by the Holy See.

2018: The Shroud is exhibited to the public from August 8 to August 12.

The shroud can be discerned more clearly in a black and white photographic negative. This processed was discovered in 1898 by Secondo Pia while producing some of the very first images of the shroud.

The Shroud of Turin remains a mystery due to the superficiality of its image, with no known method to create such an image. The 1978 research team, STURP, concluded that the image wasn’t formed by paints, pigments, dyes, an artist, or any known chemical or physical methods. Despite these findings, various hypotheses have been proposed, categorized into dead body, artistic creation, and radiation theories. The fall-through radiation theory is particularly noteworthy, as it aligns with the shroud’s 3D information, suggesting a light event where the body became mechanically transparent, allowing the cloth to fall through, creating the unique image.

Radiocarbon Dating Controversy

One of the most significant pieces of scientific evidence regarding the shroud’s authenticity came from radiocarbon dating. In 1988, samples from the shroud were sent to three separate labs (Oxford, Zurich, and Arizona) for analysis. The results, published in the journal Nature, dated the cloth to between 1260 and 1390 AD, suggesting it was a medieval artifact. However, these findings have been contested. Some researchers argue that the sample was contaminated with newer carbon due to centuries of handling, repairs, and environmental factors, which skewed the results. Moreover, subsequent studies have highlighted the possibility of the presence of a bioplastic coating or a once-living organism that could have affected the carbon dating.

Pollen Analysis

Pollen samples found on the shroud indicate that it may have originated from the region of ancient Palestine. Researchers have identified various types of pollen from plants that are native to the Middle East, lending some credence to the idea that the shroud was indeed present in the region during the time of Jesus. This evidence, however, is not conclusive, as the pollen could have been introduced during the many centuries of the shroud’s journey across continents.

The Bloodstain Patterns

The bloodstains on the shroud appear to correspond to the wounds described in the Bible. Forensic analysis by Dr. Pierluigi Baima Bollone in the 1970s suggested that the bloodstains are genuine and consistent with someone who was crucified. However, critics argue that the patterns could have been painted on or otherwise artificially applied. Additionally, the presence of blood alone does not necessarily confirm a connection to Jesus Christ.

The Image Formation

The image on the shroud is not a simple painting or dye. It appears to be a complex, photonegative image, which suggests that it was not produced by conventional medieval techniques. The lack of pigments or dyes and the superficial nature of the image (which only shows up on the topmost fibrils of the cloth) have led some to hypothesize that it was created by an unknown process. However, skeptics propose that it could be a medieval forgery produced using a technique known as “contact relics,” where an image is transferred from a bas-relief to cloth.

Recent Research: The 3D Nature of the Image

Recent studies using digital image processing have revealed that the shroud’s image has 3D properties, which suggests that it may have formed from an actual body. The depth information in the image correlates with the contours of a human body, providing a more convincing argument for the shroud’s authenticity. This evidence, while compelling, does not definitively prove the shroud’s origin or connection to Jesus.

The reliability of the new X-ray dating technique on a series of samples, taken from linen fabrics ranging in age from 3000 BC to 2000 AD (see black, red, green and blue curves in the figure below). These curves show that the sample of the Shroud of Turin (orange curve in the picture) should be much older than the approximately seven centuries indicated by the radio-dating carried out in 1988.(Photo: Liberato De Caro)

Recent research by Italian scientists using advanced techniques, such as Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), suggests that a fragment of the Shroud of Turin could indeed be around 2,000 years old, dating back to the time of Christ. This new method analyzes the natural aging of flax cellulose, providing a timeline for the fabric’s manufacture. The researchers propose that the previous carbon dating, which placed the shroud in the medieval period, may have been inaccurate due to factors like radiation emitted from the body wrapped in the shroud. This finding reignites the debate about the shroud’s authenticity and its historical significance.

Conclusion

The Shroud of Turin remains an enigma, with scientific evidence both supporting and challenging its authenticity. The radiocarbon dating results, though widely cited, are contested by some due to potential contamination issues. The pollen analysis and bloodstain patterns provide intriguing hints at its possible origins, but they are not definitive. The unique image formation continues to puzzle scientists and reinforces the belief of many that the shroud is indeed the burial cloth of Jesus Christ.

In the end, the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin may never be fully resolved. The intersection of faith and science can be complex, and what one chooses to believe often depends on personal conviction and interpretation of the evidence. While science can offer valuable insights, it may never fully explain the mysteries that shroud this ancient relic.

The post Shroud of Turin ‘Is Real’ and Dates to the Time of Christ, New Scientific Findings first appeared on The Story Retold.

Disclaimer: I am not a personal fan of either of the teams featured here but I am always a fan of Jesus Christ and sharing the joy and power of our Lord!

As the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Ohio State Buckeyes gear up for the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, January 20, the spotlight isn’t just on their athletic prowess but also on their shared Christian faith, and according to Riley Leonard that is not just a coincidence. Both teams have been vocal about sharing their belief in Jesus Christ, making this matchup even more intriguing.

“I just started trusting the Lord. I looked up and said, ‘Jesus, whatever your will is for my life, I trust it 100 percent.'”

Riley Leonard

Riley Leonard’s Faith Comments Stir Strong Reactions

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard recently made headlines with his comments about the role of faith in their journey to the championship. While some praised Leonard for his openness, others criticized him for attributing their success solely to faith. Leonard has never shied away from professing his faith, which was evidenced during his postgame interview with ESPN after Notre Dame’s victory over Penn State in the Orange Bowl.

We’re the two main teams to just publicly display our faith the most. I truly believe that Jesus was looking over both our shoulders throughout the season & put these two teams on a pedestal for a reason.

Riley Leonard

Ohio State’s Ryan Day Supports His Players’ Faith

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, a practicing Catholic, has been supportive of his players’ faith. “We were called to be bold,” Day said. He appreciates the impact of faith on his team and believes it brings them closer together.

After Ohio State won the Cotton Bowl last weekend, defensive end Jack Sawyer told an ESPN reporter, “God’s blessed this team with so much ability. We wouldn’t be here without [God], so we give him all the credit first and foremost.”

Christian Gray’s Mission to Share His Faith

Notre Dame cornerback Christian Gray has also been vocal about his faith. “I feel like my mission is to share the glory of God for others and tell kids you can do the same thing,” Gray said. His dedication to his faith and his mission to inspire others is evident in his actions both on and off the field.

The Impact of Faith on the Field

The influence of faith on both teams is undeniable. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman, who converted to Catholicism in 2021, has instituted game-day Mass for his players for the first time in over a decade.

“What better time is there to go have mass?” he asked the National Catholic Register in August 2022. “What better time to be able to really be on the edge of your seat to get every word that comes out of the priest’s mouth and to be as close to God as you can?”

Marcus Freeman, National Catholic Register in August 2022

Ohio State players have also embraced their faith, holding a campus rally that included baptisms at the start of the season. This shared commitment to their beliefs has created a strong sense of unity and purpose among the players.

The most incredible night I have experienced in a longggg time!

As the two teams prepare to face off, it’s clear that their faith will play a significant role in their performance. Whether it’s Leonard’s belief in divine intervention or Gray’s mission to share his faith, the impact of their spirituality is evident. This championship game isn’t just about football; it’s about the power of faith and the bonds it creates.

Godspeed John Glenn

John Herschel Glenn Jr., a legendary figure in American history and an iconic astronaut, was celebrated not just for his groundbreaking role in space exploration but also for his profound faith. Born on July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio, Glenn’s extraordinary journey took him from the thrilling world of fighter jets to the vast frontiers of space. His enduring legacy stands as a tribute to the limitless potential of the human spirit and the relentless pursuit of discovery, embodying both faith and exploration.

“To look out at this kind of creation and not believe in God is to me impossible,” Glenn told reporters in 1998, just after returning from his final trip to space at age 77. “It just strengthens my faith.”

A Truly Supersonic Flight

On July 16, 1957, Marine Major John Glenn established the transcontinental airspeed record by piloting a Vought F8U-1P Crusader from NAS Los Alamitos to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. The journey spanned 2,360 miles (3,798 kilometers) and lasted 3 hours, 23 minutes, and 8.4 seconds. Glenn’s average speed was a remarkable 725.25 miles per hour (1,167.18 kilometers per hour). This monumental feat was a component of “Project Bullet,” which was designed to evaluate the F8U’s prolonged performance at near-maximum power across an extended distance. Equipped with six cameras for panoramic imaging, Glenn’s aircraft necessitated three in-flight refuelings to complete the trip. Following this groundbreaking flight, John Glenn would go on to be the first American astronaut to orbit Earth as part of Project Mercury.

A Cosmic Journey and Daily Devotion

Glenn’s historic flight aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, made him the first American to orbit the Earth. As he circled our planet, he took moments to reflect on the majesty of creation. His faith was an integral part of this cosmic journey. Glenn prayed daily during his time in orbit, finding solace and connection with God amidst the weightlessness of space.

“John Glenn is always used as that paradigmatic example of somebody who had a strong faith before becoming an astronaut, and for him it was reinforced by his experience in space,” said Shelhamer, a Johns Hopkins University medical professor who recently served as the chief scientist for human research at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Faith and Science: A Harmonious Coexistence

Glenn firmly believed that faith and science need not be at odds. As a Presbyterian, he saw no conflict between his religious convictions and his scientific pursuits. He emphasized that understanding of the natural world did not diminish the wonder of God’s creation.

Active Church Involvement

Throughout his life, Glenn remained actively involved in his church community. He attended the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., where he served as a Sunday school teacher and participated in various church activities. His commitment to faith extended beyond the confines of the spacecraft or the halls of Congress.

Legacy of Inspiration

John Glenn’s legacy transcends the boundaries of science and politics. His unwavering faith, coupled with his courage and curiosity, continues to inspire generations. Whether gazing at the stars or standing at the pulpit, Glenn exemplified the harmony between faith and exploration—a lesson we can all learn from.

From an early age, Caitlin Clark established a foundation of faith, a cornerstone that was laid during her formative years in Des Moines, Iowa. As she rises to prominence in the WNBA, it’s poignant to reflect on her upbringing where she was part of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church community.

Her educational journey began at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School, and it was there, at the tender age of five, that she first picked up a basketball, distinguishing herself as the only girl on an all-boys team.

Father Joseph Pins, the beloved pastor of St. Francis, which is Clark’s family parish, shares a close bond with the Clark household. In a heartfelt conversation with Crux, Father Pins expressed the collective pride of the parish community in Clark’s remarkable achievements. “We’re proud of our alumna who has done such a great, great, great, thing in life. It’s always good as we form children to watch this go through and see success not just on the basketball court but also in her faith life,” he shared.

Over time, Caitlin had blossomed into an outstanding high school athlete at Dowling Catholic in West Des Moines, Iowa, where faith became a cornerstone of her everyday existence. Those formative years in high school laid the groundwork for the principles and values that guide her life still today.

Thomas Wilson, the athletic director at Dowling Catholic, attributed Clark’s success to her Catholic education and the school’s ethos of encouraging students “to shoot high”.

The main reason that her family was involved in Dowling Catholic was because of the faith component, and so Caitlin was always going to go to Dowling Catholic, and she really enjoyed her four years here.
Caitlin Clark’s former high school coach, Kristin Meyer

Behind the scenes Caitlin was an outgoing, studious and religious girl. She wanted to be treated like everyone else, but she’s constantly been reminded that her talent makes that a difficult task.

Kristin Meyer, who coached Clark throughout her high school basketball career at Dowling, was a firsthand witness to Clark’s dedication. Meyer observed not only Clark’s athletic prowess but also her deep faith and recognition of her talents as God’s blessings.

“It’s not just about scoring a lot of points or winning; she loves playing in front of a sold out arena because she gets to entertain people and bring a smile to their face,” Meyer shared in an interview with Crux, “For two hours she lets them have this great experience and she takes that pretty seriously and knows that those gifts from God are an opportunity to bring joy to other people.”

Clark was a standout varsity basketball player for Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, and openly expressed her faith both on and off the court. In an interview with the Des Moines Register in 2018, Clark shared, “We get to live our faith every day. Dowling starts every day with prayer and ends every day with prayer. This is a big reason why Dowling has such a special culture and is such a special place to go to school.” Her commitment to her faith is interwoven with her athletic discipline, exemplifying the school’s ethos and the role of spirituality in education.

Clark seamlessly integrated the values from her Catholic upbringing into her time with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Her Twitter feed reflected this, with posts that extend prayers to her fans and even to opponents who had sustained injuries, showcasing a spirit of compassion and community.

Caitlin Clark’s rise to prominence is a testament to the solid foundation of faith instilled in her from a young age, which has shaped her commendable attitude both on and off the basketball court. Her respectful and dignified manner, coupled with her determination to act with integrity in challenging situations, continues to shine through despite the relentless scrutiny of the public eye.

God has truly placed her, and the talent bestowed upon her at the forefront, presenting us with an opportunity to observe and perhaps learn from it.

The post Caitlin Clark: Ascending Heights on a Foundation of Faith first appeared on The Story Retold.

Every day at The Story Retold, new content seems to jump out at me from fresh and unexpected sources. During a recent press conference, Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla was questioned about the significance of having two black head coaches in this year’s NBA Finals, a milestone not seen since 1975. A devout Catholic, Mazzulla points to Christ, faith when asked to comment on the matter, showing that his Christian identity holds greater importance for him.

Given the plight, sometimes of black head coaches in the NBA, do you think this is a significant moment? Do you take pride in this? How do you view this or do you not see it at all?

Vince Goodwill of Yahoo Sports

The inquiry came from Vince Goodwill of Yahoo Sports, who highlighted the historic nature of the event, given the challenges black head coaches often face in the NBA. Mazzulla, who has been very open about his Christian faith during his short tenure as the Celtics’ head coach, replied to the question:

I wonder how many of those have been Christian coaches?

Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla

The Celtics coach’s faith has been a consistent theme throughout his leadership, often referencing God’s timing and purpose when discussing his team’s journey and successes.

In 2022, Mazzulla was asked if he had the opportunity to meet with members of the British Royal Family during a November 2022 game between the Celtics and the Miami Heat. Mazzulla inquired if the reporter was referring to “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.”

Both Joe Mazzulla and Dallas Mavericks’ head coach Jason Kidd, have backgrounds in Catholic education, which intertwines their faith with their professional journeys.

As the Celtics compete for the championship against the Mavericks, Mazzulla’s faith continues to be at the core of his coaching philosophy and public image.

In the competitive environment that we are in, we are always used to earning something,” he said when asked about the concept of grace. “When you apply that competitive nature to your faith, it creates a lot of, for me, anxiety, stress and like and separation from Christ. So, when I was able to really go down the road to grace and understanding that I can’t earn it, and I don’t have to be competitive, it’s not a win or loss. It’s an acceptance. That is one of the virtues that we can really show each other in the world today.

Mazzulla, Sports Spectrum Interview April 2024

I cannot put into words how much this fills my spirit with hope and love, for this type of testimony, happening right in front of our eyes in the mainstream media. It renews my belief that God is at all times working for good in our lives and revealing himself through his followers.

Lord, please let them see you, in me.

Amen.

The post Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla Points to Christ, Faith first appeared on The Story Retold.
