Right Where You Stand
The Bible is overflowing with stories that demonstrate God’s readiness to engage with individuals right where they stand. These stories, spanning from Genesis to the New Testament, reveal a God who is not distant and detached but one who is deeply involved in the human experience. They show a God who does not wait for people to reach a certain level of perfection or understanding but meets them amidst their circumstances, with all their imperfections and struggles. This theme weaves through the tapestry of scripture, presenting a God who is accessible and compassionate, always seeking to connect with humanity in a meaningful way at the perfect time.
It is so important for us, in our personal journey with Christ, to understand that he came to us with intent, and purpose. He engaged us at the perfect time, when we were ready, allowing us to take the leap of faith into giving up this world and running out of the grave into His loving arms. We were freed of the burdens we carried, and we overflow with joy at this newfound freedom.
Sometimes in our excitement we overreach and expect everyone to come to Christ with us at the same time, but this is unrealistic and not true to scripture. We must patiently wait, showing others who Jesus is, and praying that they too will take the leap of faith.
Let’s explore a few stories from the Bible that illustrate those whose circumstances led them to that perfect moment where God came to them and changed their lives forever.
Stories from Scripture, His Perfect Time
The Woman at the Well (John 4)
Jesus encounters a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Amidst societal divisions, Jesus breaks these barriers and converses with her, a woman with a complex history. In their exchange, He reveals His identity as the Messiah and meets her profound spiritual needs, offering the ‘living water’—symbolic of eternal life. He approaches her when she is marginalized by society, burdened by her life. He teaches us that it is her faith and His grace that redeem her, not her social standing, conditions, or virtuous actions.
Zacchaeus (Luke 19)
A tax collector ostracized by his community, seeks to catch a glimpse of Jesus by climbing a sycamore tree. Recognizing Zacchaeus’s efforts, Jesus extends an invitation to himself, visiting Zacchaeus’s residence, an act that leads to a profound transformation in Zacchaeus’s life. This encounter illustrates the theme of redemption and acceptance, demonstrating that personal change is possible, with faith, regardless of one’s profession or societal standing.
The Prodigal Son (Luke 15)
The parable tells the story of a rebellious son who wastes his inheritance and finds himself destitute, tending to pigs. Upon his return, contrite and humbled, he is welcomed with open arms by his father. This narrative illustrates the concept that God’s love and forgiveness are extended to us even in our most wayward and shattered states.
Paul’s Conversion (Acts 9)
Saul, who would later be known as Paul, was fervently opposed to Christians and zealously persecuted them. However, on his journey to Damascus, he encountered Jesus in a vision that left him physically blind but spiritually enlightened. This encounter transformed Saul’s fervor from persecution to passionate advocacy for God’s kingdom.
Mary Magdalene (John 20)
Mary, a woman with a troubled past, who had experienced many hardships, comes upon Jesus after His resurrection near the tomb. When He speaks her name, she immediately realizes who He is. This encounter beautifully illustrates how God acknowledges her sorrow, apprehension, and faithfulness.
